Introducing: Troop 242

Welcome to BSA Troop 242 of Washington, Michigan. Troop 242 is a Scout-led Troop, meaning the Scouts make the decisions on the Troop direction, trips they want to take, meeting program, etc. A good base of ASMs provides guidance when necessary. The majority of our Scouts come from the Utica school district area, the older Scouts attending Utica and Eisenhower High Schools.

Charter Organization:
First Baptist Church of Washington Michigan
58774 Van Dyke, Washington, MI 48094

(South of 27 Mile Road, on the east side of the street,
across the street from the Washington Post Office)

Troop Meetings:
Meetings are held weekly, on Thursdays @ 7:00 p.m. Mid-August through Mid-June.

Scouts are expected to wear Full Class A Uniforms at all meetings.

RULE OF THUMB: If the schools are closed due to inclement (bad) weather, there will be no meeting that night (based upon Rochester Schools). Please refer to the website for meeting dates.

Code of Conduct
Scouts are expected to observe the Scout Oath and Law, BSA and Troop policies and regulations and Church building rules in order to:

  • Gain the most positive value from their scouting experience.
  • Protect the health and safety of all persons.
  • Maintain the rights of others.
  • Respect and protect Troop program equipment and facilities.

Scouts are expected to attend Troop and Patrol Meetings on a regular basis, be prompt to the meetings, and devote their energies to learning under the direction of all troop leaders.

More information
The Troop is funded by our mandatory bottle drive, held each fall. This activity raises funds necessary to purchase rank and event patches, merit badges, and other Troop-related items and expenses. We also have a voluntary bottle drive each spring. The money raised at this event is evenly distributed among the participating Scouts, and placed in their individual Scout accounts to use towards trips and gear. Another mandatory event we hold is the Adopt-A-Road cleanup held every spring. The Troop goes beyond the usual one mile stretch and is responsible for a two mile section of 22 Mile Road in Shelby Township.

During the Scout year, the Troop attends many trips and activities. Some recent trips include our annual Polar Bear camp in Traverse City, a canoeing adventure at Cole Canoe Base, Wright-Patterson Air Force Museum, and Mammoth Caves National Park. We also hold weekend trips (usually local) for Scout Skills and Scout Shooting camps. Another favorite of the Scouts is our laser tag event, held as our last meeting before Christmas break. They play non-stop for hours, and have an absolute blast.

The Troop has a high success rate for Scouts achieving Eagle rank. This is attributed to many factors, including boy-led status (experiencing leadership), high trip and activity level (keeping it fun), Troop skill and badge nights (learning new things), and peer motivation (seeing fellow Scouts make Eagle). Our roster has 22 boys, with 3 currently at Life Scout rank, working on their Eagle requirements. We also have a number of Eagle scouts that continue to be active in the troop.

If you would like more information, or to schedule a Troop visit for your Webelos scout, please use the Contact Us selection in the menu, or simply stop by one of our Troop Meetings. We look forward to new correspondence, and welcoming new Scouts into our family.
